Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: What is the Norton Garden Tool Sharpener?

Answer: It is a tool used for sharpening garden tools such as lawn mowers.
  • Question: What is the size of the Norton Garden Tool Sharpener?

Answer: It is a large size for easy handling.
  • Question: Is there a guide included with the stone?

Answer: Yes, there is a sharpening guide included inside every Norton packaged stone.
  • Question: What is the grit # on this?

Answer: Looks like it was Medium to me. Does sharpen garden tools pretty well, but I think I'd have gone with a coarser grit as it would get the tools sharper more quickly and I'm not looking to sharpen quality knives..
  • Question: Can this be used for glass burs?

Answer: Probably, but I would recommend using fine grit emery tape. Usually glass burs require rounding the glass as well and a supple medium would work better. Wetting the emery tape or the stone helps avoid further chipping/burring as well. A soft touch is key! Good luck.
  • Question: Would this be a good stone for sharpening my kukhri knife?

Answer: You can pretty much sharpen anything with this stone. If the blade is curved I would guess you can just follow the curve of the blade for sharpening. I use it mostly for garden tools, and it works well.
  • Question: Can you use water instead of oil with this stone?

Answer: Yes. Many people who use these with scythes and frequently have to sharpen will have a plastic belt pouch filled with water to let these soak in while they are working. It keeps the stone constantly wet and prevents it from getting clogged. Also less mess than oil. If you do use water, you do need to use a lot more of it. With oil, you can just put a layer on the surface, or maybe soak it one time. With water, you'll want to soak it for about 5 minutes then keep it wet... hence the belt pouch full of water. I don't mean pouch like a soft pouch. A hard plastic holder, but I can't think of the proper term.
  • Question: Can this be used for stained glass grinding?

Answer: I have never tried to grind any kind of glass. But, FYI, it does an amazing job of rough tools like lawn mower blades, hoes, and shovels. Can you check with the company that makes it?
  • Question: Would this be an effective sharpening tool for garden hedge shears?

Answer: This stone can be used for any number of sharpening tasks, garden hedge shears included.
  • Question: Can it be used on plastic scrapers and putty knives?

Answer: Plastic no, it would splinter but the putty knife would be ok. It would not give an edge like a knife but it would sharpen it roughly.
  • Question: Can this be used for sewing scissors?

Answer: You probably could. It's a small stone and could be used for sharpening just about anything. I used it for outdoor clippers and pruners, but it would work to sharpen anything.
