Exploration Editorial Review
The "Herland" Dover Thrift Editions book is a novella written in 1915 about a female utopian society. The story follows three male explorers searching for this fabled place where women reproduce without men, and all babies are female. The women are eager to learn about the outside world as the men are to learn about theirs. However, the more the women learn of a world with disease, war, crime, and poverty, the less they want to join it. All three men find partners, but their expectations are quite different, creating a dilemma for the women. The novel is an interesting take on a convergence of a utopian female society with regular alpha society that hasn't changed enough yet. Though this story was written over 100 years ago, its insights still ring true. The book does have one political view espousing the nature of motherhood as the savior, but it is well written, well-read, and entertaining. The author's focus on sex and sexual politics still at work in its various forms today emerges as an interesting snapshot of how little society has grown. The book is a fascinating look at feminine writing at its best and is a novel that needs to be read because it was released in 1915, and no one had dared to write anything like it. The novella's insights are still true to this day.
